I’m very excited to see Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company returning to TITAS. Israel consistently produces great artists. Rami’s work has always intrigued me. I find his work to be full of abandon. The choreography and the dancers do not hold back. There’s lots of risk in the work and the movement, and I love that.

All performing arts companies want to create amazing work, and in that regard Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company (KCDC) is no different. But for KCDC performance is just one element in a huge portfolio of activities that ranges from sold out shows at Sydney Opera House to community cohesion efforts that build bridges between Arabs and Israelis. KCDC is more than just a dance company: it’s a social movement.

As with so much of the psyche of modern Israel, the ghosts of history are much closer to the surface; so when the company makes its Australian debut at the Sydney Opera House later this month with Horses In The Sky, they will do so with their past very much written into every movement.

Yehudit Arnon is the name of a dancer born in the former Czechoslovakia who, during World War II, survived the Nazi death camps despite refusing to dance for her captors. Years after the war, she settled at the Ga'aton kibbutz in Galilee, where she established a dance centre and was one of the founders of the International Dance Village.

Be’er’s work holds to the expressionistic modern style of his predecessor, though he uses classical ballet technique to train his dancers. Like every good dance master, he demands strong technique and a musical ear from his performers, but emphasizes dancers who stand out from the crowd and can play a variety of characters with subtlety and nuance.
